One of my favorite parts of the game was Shepard and Legion’s strained relationship in ME3. Legion during the whole conflict is becoming an individual. For the first time he is experiencing doubt, fear, and shame. He lies to Shepard on several occasions; the first organic in hundreds of years that cooperates with the Geth. Shepard is starting to become frustrated with all the lack of communication and mistrust. Legion openly admits that the Geth are just as flawed as their creators. All this doubt boils down to that pivotal moment, “Do we deserve death?”
That they possess the capability for dishonesty is part of why my Shepards can never look at them as anything other than intelligent, living creatures. Oh Legion. ):
During the last shuttle ride with Legion, when it’s clear he lied a second time…Shep breaks in anger, and chastises Legion like a child. It’s one of the only times I’ve really felt the reaction was almost too raw to look at. Because Shep cares about Legion the way he cares about no other member of his crew. He doesn’t just have a stake in what happens to the geth, he is directly responsible for what happens to THIS geth. He says “you’re better than this!” and he means it. He believes it when no one else can.
UGH. And when Legion hangs his head and replies, after a painful pause, “it appears we are not,” I always get the feeling he means everyone. Shep, the quarians, the humans, the geth. We’re NOT better than this. But if someone, just one person, thinks you are… .you try like hell to be worthy of that faith.
Oh LEGION!!
